The Pro-Health for Life and AARP survey, just discovered that that dental health is the third most important medical concern among people 48+. The study documented 500 participants age 48 and over.
The findings were:
• 75% of the participants rated their dental health care as very important compared with their overall health concerns
• 60 % do not use a mouthwash
• 47 % do not floss
• 35 % only brush once a day
The study was conducted by nonprofit organization AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons, in order to better understand the attitudes of people over the age of 50 towards oral health.
At our Coos Bay dental office, we build relationships with our patients, and stress the importance of preventive oral health care. No matter what your age, it is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss every day.
The survey reported that this age group 48+ visits the dentist at least twice a year. However, we strongly suggest that no matter what your age, you come and see us for a routine cleaning at least twice a year.
During these cleanings, the doctor can help prevent future problems and access your health goals with you.
From this study, it would seem older adults are generally aware of the importance of maintaining good oral health, but we urge parents to educate their children early on.
If you wait until you older to do regular checkups it could be to late. You may develop more cavities; tooth decay or other more sever oral health issues.
We also suggest to our patients to use a mouthwash that they enjoy. Picking a flavor and brand that you like will help you enjoy the process of using mouthwash more. The same suggestion would go for finding floss you like.
The benefits of taking care of your teeth are important. You will not only feel healthier but you will most likely smile more.
We encourage you to practice preventive oral health care and call us to set up your next appointment.
